Gianforte Sides with Anti-Public Lands Extremists Over Law Enforcement and Public Lands

Today, multimillionaire Congressman Greg Gianforte sided with anti-public lands extremists convicted of destroying public lands over law enforcement officers and Montanans who support public lands. Gianforte praised the pardon of Dwight and Steven Hammond as “a victory for private land owners and our way of life,” despite their dual convictions for destroying public land and the more than 80 percent of Montanans who identify as conservationists.

Gianforte has repeatedly shown that his definition of “our way of life” does not include protecting public land. He has introduced legislation to remove protections from almost 700,000 acres of Montana’s public land and he voted to gut the Antiquities Act, endangering Montana’s Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. He alsofamously sued the state of Montana to block an easement on his property in 2009.

Additionally, this is not the first time Gianforte has disrespected law enforcement. Moments after assaulting Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs last year, Gianforte lied to policeabout his actions and has since refused to apologize.
